Sweet Revenge

I was introduced to *Australian at a Halloween party thrown by him and his two best friends, one of whom was my good friend’s boyfriend at the time. It was one of those situations where both parties had been talked up by the respective friend and alas, we would finally meet in person!  However, it was Australian’s party and his house so every time we locked eyes and tried to start a conversation, we were interrupted by some party emergency or another guest who wanted to talk to the host.

This much I knew: he was tall, he was handsome, he was successful, and he was Australian.  Swoon. I was acting as sober driver, mainly because I’m pretty sure I was still drunk from the night before…so many Halloween parties…so little time!  As soon as I rounded up my passengers and it was time to go, I found Australian to say thank you for the party and goodnight. In his beautiful accent that made my ovaries do little backflips he apologized for not getting the chance to talk with me more and asked for my phone number, promising to call. I gladly obliged.

He texted me a couple days later with some playful banter about the Whoopie Pies I brought to the party. Never attend a party empty handed! – My Mother  A few days after that was his birthday so I sent him a “Happy Birthday” text which turned in a few messages back and forth, but nothing more than chit chat. Since our future of Australian-accented babies was starting to look less and less likely with every day he didn’t ask me out, I decided to move on. This is about the time I started to date Sam—the one who treated me like a girlfriend but didn’t want a girlfriend.  

Shortly after the New Year we heard of a birthday party for the third friend at a local Hollywood hotel. Since my “relationship” with Sam was quickly disintegrating, we got dolled up and went to the party with the intent to hook me up with an Aussie.  We talked and drank and as he was walking me and my girlfriends to a cab he tried to pull me in for a kiss. I leaned away and slyly said, “Maybe you should call me this time.”  I was and still am very proud of this moment.  But did he call? Nope. I only drunk texted him a couple of times after that then decided to stop altogether.

On St. Patrick’s Day, I met a very sweet, considerate, hilarious, and respectable guy and we started to date pretty steadily. Just around the time I entered panic mode because I realized, oh crap I really like him, he asked me to be his girlfriend and I gladly accepted. The next night was a Memorial Day party hosted by my good friend’s now ex-boyfriend, the Australian, and their third friend and we decided to make an appearance because well, we were invited.

When Australian approached our group he immediately congratulated me on my new job and asked what else was new. I told him I would be moving closer to downtown soon and he said, “Oh great.  You were always too far away up where you live.” I responded with, “It’s really not that far, I mean, my boyfriend lives in [blah blah] City and it’s not too far for us.”  Boom. I had absolutely zero interest in Australian by this point but that last moment of sweet, sweet revenge is something I admit to loving. It also helped that he spent the rest of the night arguing with his lady-friend in the corner.

Oh, your boy doesn't wear neck ties?... it's cool, you can just get him a plaid pocket square instead... that's right, no excuses.
